 Size restrictions:
Maximum lens diameter is 84mm. If focus or zoom clamp is required,
maximum barrel diameter is 71mm with the standard Ikelite clamp
set, 76mm with the special clamp set 5509.28 (supplied with DSLR
housings).
Mechanical
restrictions: Lens couplings use a rotary action, therefore,
push-pull zoom controls cannot be used underwater. Manual focus
zoom lenses are not recommended.
 
Optical Requirements: In general, wide-angle and Zoom
lenses should be used with a dome port; standard, macro and telephoto
lenses should be used with a flat port.
Infinity correction: When a Zoom lens is used with a 6"
dome port, a +4 Diopter close-up
lens may be required to counteract the de-magnifying effect
of the port.
 Vignetting:
With long-throw lenses, there is always a danger of vignetting
(dark corners) when the front of the lens is furthest back in
the port. This applies particularly to 1:1 Macro lenses. If the
possibility of vignetting at infinity is not acceptable, use
a dome port.
Dome size:
Dome ports are available with either 3" or 4" optical
radius. In keeping with industry convention, these are known
as 6" and 8" domes. The advantages of a large dome
are: improved minimum focusing distance (diopter lens is less
likely to be needed); less difference between in-air and underwater
focusing distances (better for half-in half-out shots), and reduced
chromatic aberration. The disadvantages are: increased buoyancy,
the ever present need to protect a large optical surface from
damage, and increased cost. |
 Lens Physical
Length: Rotate the focus and zoom controls until the lens
is at its maximum length. Measure the length of the lens, including
any filters or diopters you intend to use, and choose a port
which can accommodate it. |

 Control Linkages:
The Ikelite housing has provision for one rotary zoom
or focus control. The housing is supplied with a manual focus/zoom
coupling (gear sleeve and lens-barrel clamp) which works with
most lenses. Since there is only one mechanical coupling, it
can be used for focus or zoom, but not both; for which
reason, manual focus zooms are not recommended. Some longer lenses
have a zoom or focus barrel which lies beyond the reach of the
housing mechanism. In this case, a flat port with focus/zoom
control is required. Since the mechanical coupling is rotary,
push-pull type zoom lenses cannot be zoomed when inside the housing.
 When testing
a lens with a port for the first time, lie the housing on
its back and put a few layers of tissue paper over the front
of the lens before winding it close to the port window. Check
that clearance is still sufficient with the port pressed firmly
into the housing (as it will be by water-pressure whilst diving).
Unsuitable ports can be returned for refund or exchange, provided
that they are complete with original packaging and documentation,
and undamaged. |
